Disaronno was one of the bottles that were always in my parent’s bar when I was little. It seemed to be the same through my entire childhood since I’ve never seen them drink it. I think the security label was still intact. Eventually, I had the opportunity to try it & I immediately liked the taste. I must say that I love everything remotely close to that sweet almond taste whether it is marzipan, maraschino cherries or plain almond paste. I recently bought myself a bottle to reminisce my youth & I’ve decided to analyze it thoroughly in order to give it a review that will be as objective as possible.
Disaronno
Distilled by Disaronno
Type: Nut Liqueur/Amaretto
Region: Saronno, Italy
Age: None
ABV: 28% (56 proof)
Ingredients: Bitter almond essential oil from peach pits, Vanilla, other secret ingredients.
Colouring: Yes
Appearance: 5/10
The bottle comes in its recognizable square shape with the oversize cap. Even though I understand the design behind it for marketing purposes, I think it lacks efficiency. Its unusual silhouette makes it weird to grab & takes space on the bar shelves. The glass is also clear which isn’t good in order to keep the integrity of the liqueur. The cap doesn’t screw on perfectly making it twists infinitely unless I press really hard on top of it to lock it down. Needless to say, that I don’t like the practicality of this bottle whether it be for protection, for handling or for storing. The liquid is an orange amber with dark golden hues. The amaretto is mostly clear, although there is a very slight haze even at room temperature. Like most liqueurs, when I tilt it against the sides of the glasses it leaves some sticky drops that fail to get back in the liquid.
Nose: 12.5/15
The nose is really straightforward with sharp marzipan notes, followed by some sweet cherries, toasted almond, maple syrup & flamed orange peel. There is also a hint of ginger, candied flower petals & vanilla. The result is a sweet, simple amaretto with subtle aromas of fruits & spices.
Mouth: 11/15
The sweetness is hard to miss. It invades your mouth & coats all your taste buds, without ever being cloying. There is a faint ethanol note as well as some almond flavours that match the aromas found on the nose although it is richer & less delicate on the palate. The ginger & the flowers are even more subtle while the vanilla takes a step forward. While the alcohol helps to balance the sugar, it remains a very sweet liqueur.
Finish: 8/10
The finish reminds me of maple taffy on snow. It is quite long, carrying some flavours of toasted almonds for many seconds along with a fair level of sweetness.
Overall: 73/100
This really brings me back to some of the first time I had the opportunity to taste alcoholic beverages. The sweet maple, marzipan & fruit notes will never cease to please me. I’m curious, however, as to different amaretto liqueurs that may be available, even more than that, what about other types of nut liqueurs I could find!
