This is known as Coureur des Bois where I live but in other parts of the Canada it is known as Cabot’s Trail. It is a Maple Syrup Cream Liqueur with a Rum base. It’s definitely a must for anyone who has a taste for maple even though there are other more refined examples that have been released since this one.

Coureur des Bois Crème d’Érable
Made by: Ungava Spirits
Type: Maple Cream
Region: Cowansville, Québec, Canada
Age: N/A
ABV: 15% (30 proof)
Colouring: Yes
Appearance: 7.5/10
This cream comes in a thin rectangle dark bottle with a screw cap. Even though the dark coloured glass is good to protect the liquid, the metal screw cap is not very effective to keep oxygen at bay once it has been opened. Furthermore, the bottle is not really easy to fit on shelves due to its awkward shape. The cream in itself has a pale beige colour with a completely opaque appearance. When I swirl it, it leaves a very thin film on the sides of the glass with a whiter crest, but without legs.
Nose: 10/15
The nose as intense aromas of cream & milk with only a faint maple note. There is a more dominant note of butterscotch & brown sugar. I also perceive a faint orange marmalade, honey & smoke coming from the glass. The maple I perceive is closer to a maple candy than to real syrup.
Mouth: 9.5/15
The mouthfeel is incredibly viscous & lusciously sweet. There’s a faint ethanol to sharpen the sensation & help to alleviate the cloying sweetness. The flavours are similar to what I got on the nosing part, but the maple is more enjoyable this time around. It seems less artificial & more like maple syrup. The flavours lean also less on milk & cream.
Finish: 8.5/10
The finish is incredibly long with a lengthy sweetness perception. The lasting aromas are maple syrup, caramel, honey & slightly fruity notes.
Overall: /100
This is an interesting cream to try, especially for people who don’t have the opportunity to have maple syrup easily. However, I believe there are more maple-forward creams that focus less on the sugar levels & more on the flavour profile. It is not bad nor great, but average & there’s definitely a lot of other products to try. In order to be more balanced, it definitely needs to be diluted in the form of a cocktail on with crushed ice.
