This was released about a year ago & at the first whiff I knew I had to buy a bottle. It was aromatic & expressed a bouquet quite unusual for a gin, in my experience. The nose was reminiscent of rose water, grapefruit peel & anise. I found out that it wasn’t my favourite for Gin & Tonics, the flavours never really being in balance in the drink. So, I tried a Negroni and even though it made quite a unique cocktail profile, it was tasty. By the way the Forbidden fruit is commonly known as a grapefruit.

Produced by: Maison des Futailles
Type: Modern Dry Gin - Cold Compound
Region: Canada
Age: N/A
ABV: 43% (86 proof)
Botanicals: Nordic Juniper Berries (Canada), Elderflower (England), Forbidden fruit (Caribbean), Labrador Tea (Canada), Apricot Almonds (Spain), Coriander (Morocco), Orris Flower Root (Italy).
Appearance: 8/10
It comes in a nice tall cylindric bottle very easy to grab & doesn’t use too much valuable shelf space. The design is very beautiful & the cork is made of black rubber which blends efficiency & elegance. With more & more gins being coloured, it gets more important to add some time to appreciate the nuances. In this case, the liquid is transparent with a crest falling back quickly without any legs.
Nose: 11/15
On the nose you get a very powerful bouquet of grapefruit peel, roses & orange blossoms. There is also quite a distinct note of anise similar to black jelly beans giving an overall impression of sweets. There is a subtle presence of coriander & juniper lending a welcomed spiciness that balances the more citrus & floral notes. The almonds & the Labrador tea provide a soft marzipan & mint-like smell that appears every other sip. Even if all the botanicals seem to participate to the gin at different degrees, it is quite easy to be overwhelmed by the grapefruit & floral notes which weakens the balance.
Mouth: 10.5/15
Surprisingly the alcohol is smoother than expected, considering the proof. It gives a spicy ethanol perfume as well as a sharp, but pleasant bite. It has a medium to full body with an oily texture, a mildly sweet presence & a bitter palate. I appreciate a lot the floral & citrus pairing in a gin as it provides a great refreshment. All the subtler ingredients on the nose have more space giving a better impression of the interactions between all these botanicals & the overall profile tends less towards candies. It’s still a little unbalanced with the grapefruit & anise-like notes taking the spot.
Finish: 7/10
The finish is representative of the experience so far. Grapefruit & floral notes are upfront until they slowly lend place to the spicy & herbal ingredients. It lasts for a moderate amount of time before fading quickly.
Overall: 73/100
A good gin & a pleasant experience. The botanicals create a unique product which may be hard to appreciate for some, although could easily be enjoyed by others. Not the most balanced offer I’ve seen, yet not the worst. I can’t say I will buy it again, but I sure will have it if it’s on a cocktail menu. I recommend it to people who like modern gin or any of the powerful flavours mentioned & who don't mind a certain level of sweetness.
