Milagro is known among Tequila aficionados to be a great gateway to higher quality tequilas. This means no autoclave & no diffuser. It’s the best way to ensure that the spirit you have in your glass is full of elegant flavours. I opted for the Silver, since it was the easiest for me to get hold of & as soon as I opened it I could say that I wasn’t disappointed. The aromas were invigorating.
“…very effective in a wide range of cocktails.”
Leyenda del Milagro Tequila Silver
Distilled by: Tequilera Milagro, NOM 1559
Type: Tequila Blanco, Roller mill, Stone Oven
Region: Los Altos, Jalisco, Mexico
Age: Unaged
ABV: 40% (80 proof)
Colouring: No
Appearance: 7.5/10
The negative aspects of the visual are the lack of information on the label regarding the product or the way it was made as well as the clear-coloured glass. As mentioned in a few reviews, darker shades of bottles are much more adequate in protecting the liquid against the UV rays. On the other hand, the bottle is very graceful with its long narrow shape & it doesn’t take a lot of space on my shelves which is always a win. It is topped with an efficient cork, preventing any oxidation or evaporation that could ruin the spirit. In the glass, the Tequila is very clear & when tilted, very few legs forms & the crest is ephemeral.
Nose: 12.5/15
The nose is obviously dominated by cooked agave, but there is a nice complexity behind it. There are sharp notes of black pepper, lemon zest & grapefruit peel as well as a grassy quality. Besides the bold spiciness & the citrus, I manage to perceive a delicate minerality along with some wild flowers. The nose evolves as I continue to analyze it & the grassiness turns into more of a dried herbs, lemongrass & a crisp celery aroma. All along there was a very subtle odour reminiscent of vanilla, which added a definite sweetness to Milagro's profile.
Mouth: 12/15
On the palate the sharp spiciness follows as well as the bright lemony notes. There’s a bit of ethanol coming through, although it fits the intensity of the other aromas. The green & vegetal characteristics are more vague at this point & they only give a mild herbal & earthy tone. The agave flavours are slightly dominated by the pepper & the citrus notes, but it is still quite delicious. The vanilla seems to have vanished, however, the palate is a bit off-dry, bringing back that sensation of sweetness. The medium body is enhanced by the oily texture of the Tequila. The complexity found on the nose is put to the side at the profit of intensity on the palate, which isn’t a bad thing. In fact, this makes it perfect for cocktails, where it can easily shine for its powerful aromatic qualities.
Finish: 7.5/10
The finish is quite long with the constant black pepper lasting through the end. The celery notes make a quick comeback as well. The sweetness is substituted by a faint bitterness that is much welcome, helping to alleviate the intensity & making you thirsty for another sip.
Overall: 79/100
I consider this bottle to be a great addition to my bar. Not necessarily the best sipper I’ve had, but very effective in a wide range of cocktails. The sharp aromas & the intense flavours are a nice introduction to what good Tequila can offer. I will definitely try their other products & review them later.
