Distillerie Mariana - Azimut Vodka

AlcoholAdvocate

I love local booze, so when I ran out of Vodka, I went out & bought one from a producer I’m fond of, Mariana Distillery. It is made using barley & corn, so I was expecting a full-bodied & slightly sweet Vodka, nothing too neutral, yet not flavoured either. Before reading, it should be known that I’m in the “Vodkas shouldn’t always be neutral & mild flavours shouldn’t automatically be called faults” team.

Azimut Vodka

Distilled by Distillerie Mariana Inc.

Type: Unflavoured Vodka

Region: Louiseville, Mauricie, Québec, Canada

Age: Unaged

ABV: 40.3% (80.6 proof)

Mash bill: 90% Canadian Corn, 10% Québec Barley

Colouring: No

Appearance: 7/10

Azimut comes in a medium-sized transparent bottle with a minimalist label & a wooden cork top. I know that most Vodkas are in a clear bottle but I feel like it’s not the best to protect the spirit against the light. The label doesn’t give any information on the product by itself besides the mandatory ABV. A more transparent approach from the distillery would be appreciated. The cork top is welcome helping to preserve the Vodka in a better state. Otherwise the vodka is crystal clear & when I tilt the liquid, sparse medium legs fall down at a slow pace. The visual lets me think that the texture might have an oily quality.

Nose: 12.5/15

At the first nose, I get a dusty & mildly smoky aroma dominating the Vodka. After a few minutes of breathing, this odour disappears to let shine some freshly baked baguettes, white cranberries, white flowers & sweet corn. The ethanol is present but far from aggressive, lending a sweeter note to the overall nose. A pretty neutral Vodka with a faint cereal & fruity bouquet.

Mouth: 12.5/15

Warm & sweet ethanol enters the mouth with subtle flavours of cream corn, eucalyptus, angel cake & a delicate flower perfume. The Vodka is full-bodied with an oily & creamy texture as well as a faint acidity. It also possesses a pleasant sweetness with a balanced bitterness & a light burn. It’s a nice Vodka to demonstrate how it can be neutral without being bland.

Finish: 8/10

The finish is of medium length & carries notes of flowers, corn & bread crusts.

Overall: 80/100

A very nice offering once again from Mariana. This neutral Vodka is everything but boring with its sweet & delicate perfumes. Its rich & lush mouthfeel makes it perfect for sipping on ice, adding some depth to the experience. Unfortunately, I just learned that this product is discontinued, so if you come across one, take a bottle!

3-word description:
