This is the first Tequila that I’ve bought without the intent of drinking it doing shots with lime & salt. I was a little cautious before sipping it straight since I’ve abused Tequila a bit too much in my college years to a point where only the odour would make me run away. Furthermore, after some research I found out it was crushed using a diffuser & cooked with an autoclave. Those two methods drastically decrease the flavour profile of the agave spirit. Surprisingly enough, it went down pretty easy, so I was eager to make a review about it.
Cazadores Tequila Blanco
Distilled by Cazadores Distillery, NOM 1487
Type: Tequila Blanco, Diffuser-crushed, Autoclave-cooked
Region: Los Altos, Jalisco, Mexico
Age: Unaged
ABV: 40% (80 proof)
Mash bill: 100% blue weber agave
Colouring: No
Appearance: 7.5/10
The Tequila comes in a medium-sized clear bottle with a cork top. Using cork is a nice thought for consumers since it has the ability to keep the spirit in a better state for longer. Even if the transparency of the bottle allows to see the clarity of the Tequila inside of it, a darker shade would help protect against UV rays. The liquid in the glass is clear without any deposit & when I tilt it against the sides of the Glencairn, some fast & large drops start falling off a thick & wavy crest.
Nose: 10/15
The first nose brings sharp & sweet citrus notes similar to orange, lime peel & candied lemon. On the next few smells it gets more complex with black pepper, a light creamy vanilla & some subtle smokiness. There is also a pleasant background of aromatic herbs like thyme & oregano as well as freshly cut grass which adds a green perfume to the bouquet. I perceive a faint artificial fruit candy aroma something along starbursts or Jell-O. It’s a good nose overall & I must say even if it’s made with the diffuser method, I’m far more impressed than with most of the cheap Tequila offerings.
Mouth: 10/15
The palate is sweet at first sight & then there is a mild burn from the ethanol, a light bitterness & some acidity that brings balance to the taste. It offers a medium body & an oily texture. The flavours are similar to the nose, but it gets more vegetal. I still perceive some citrus with grapefruit taking place of the earlier lime as well as bold black pepper. The artificial fruit aroma disappears into some persimmon & pear. A faint vanilla & buttery flavour comes along with some minerality & mild floral notes. The bitterness keeps it from being a perfectly enjoyable experience, although I appreciate the more complex fruity notes.
Finish: 7/10
The medium finish ends on citrus, pepper & herbal notes. Not complex yet not disappointing.
Overall: 69/100
Cazadores Blanco is definitely a good introduction to anyone who might want to bring it up a notch from cheaper brands of Tequila. However, it’s still not a top shelf bottle & some aspects are unpleasant. It’s also a great addition to a bar for the cocktail enthusiast, lingering somewhere between value & quality.
